INTERVIEW: CRYSTAL FIGHTERS

We had the chance to catch up Crystal Fighters who's forthcoming second album 'Cave Rave' drops next Monday, 27th May. Their new track 'You & I' had us hypnotised with it's catchy grooves just a few weeks ago. Here's how it went...

You’re about to release your second album and embark on a 70-date world tour, this must be a really exciting time to be a part of Crystal Fighters?

Yes, the is by far the most exciting moment in our lives, and the first few shows have been epic. We've waiting to get back on tour.

You’re launching the new album Cave Rave with a show in a cave in the Basque countryside, is Basque culture is obviously still a strong influence on the Crystal Fighters sound?

Yes we are, and you should definitely come. Basque culture will always be a strong influence in our music, and this time we looked further into the collective understanding of existence that was documented in different caves and structures around the world over 30,000 years ago. We put ourselves in the mindset of these initial cave artists who were trying to pass along knowledge of dimensions beyond the physical realm...so we thought there would be no better place to play these songs.

Is it difficult to balance what the fans might want, and what you as a band want when going through that creative process?

To be honest, we have faith in our fans understanding of our evolution. I try and only exist in the moment, as thoughts are only and illusion, We hope for our fans to try and do the same, and if the vibrations of this album do not harmonise with some of our fans frequencies, it is not the end of the world...our first album exists eternally.

Crystal Fighters shows are known for being high energy and high intensity. Is that kind of excitement that something that comes naturally or that as a band, you need to gear yourself up for?

We play every show like it might be our last, and never take the position we are in for granted. I think this mentality, along with the direct energy transfer between us and the crowd, which increases exponentially as the show progresses, has a lot to do with it.

You guys, like us at London On The Inside, obviously have a soft spot for this city. Where are the places that you like to visit or the things you like to do when you're back in London?

London is awesome! Really there's nowhere else like it, and we do love it dearly. Recently been visiting a raw vegan restaurant in Queen's Park called Nama, and it really is very delicious. Victoria park is pretty radical as well.

Crystal Fighters are set to embark on a huge world tour throughout 2013. They'll play London's KOKO tonight, 23rd May as part of their sold out EU tour. 'Cave Rave' is out on the 27th May via Zirkulo/PIAS/Atlantic. Pre order it here.

CROCODILES

We're slightly over the moon with hearing Crocodiles are back with their follow up to 2012's Endless Flowers with a new album 'Crimes of Passion' due out 19th Aug via Zoo Music. Making music since they were 18 Charles and Brandon met in the dirty glow of San Diego sun and now split their lives between New York City and London. They have brought in new blood in the form of  Sune Rose Wagner of Raveonettes to produce the new sounds. You might have seen this back in March.

Get a taste of what's to come from the new album with new track 'Cockroach'. A wise man told us this; 'It is a sadly accepted impression that life is cooler in song, on screen, in art, or in poetry, but it is far superior when the creative process is fed back into real life and an album like Crimes Of Passion is born.'

INTERVIEW: DINGUS KHAN

We caught up with Dingus Khan to ask some ridiculous questions and get some ridiculous answers to make this, a comical interview between our two parallel worlds. Obviously we touch on things like sea turtles, cocktail mixology and getting touched up by transvestites. Get a brew and dive in...

What have you be up to today?

Today we've been trying to track down Ben's dress. It's a sporty velvet gown that he's worn to every gig for the last couple of years. He left it at the Brixton Windmill last night and we're trying to work out a way of getting it back. We'd be lost without it.

Festival season is nearly here, where are yous going?

We've been at The Great Escape and Liverpool Sound City over the last couple of weeks. Later in the 'summer' we'll be at Truck Festival, Fieldview, Camden Rocks and Homegrown Festival, plus any more we come across.

What is essential Dingus Khan festival etiquette?

Gaz, one of or drummers is really the go to go guy in terms of festival etiquette. Last year at Latitude he ripped his trousers and got touched up by some transvestites. He's up there with Ray Mears when it comes to camping weekends.

If you could make a summer festival cocktail, what would be in it?

You'd start by combining equal parts warm rum from a Volvic bottle and warm vodka that's been swilled about in an old crisp packet. This would then be topped up with warm lager, cider and muddy water, garnished with some nettles and served in a Pot Noodle pot (Bombay bad boy).

Can you all time yourselves on how long you can hold your breath under water and reveal the results please?

We're unfortunately all terrified of water. However, sea turtles have an adapted cloaca (reptilian equivalent of the anus) through which they are able to take in water and extract oxygen from it. This allows them to dive underwater for far longer than other creatures. We envisage that if the members of Dingus Khan had this adaptation, our accumulative time underwater would equate to around nine years.

Have you named all the girls you should have kissed and all the boys you should have hit and told them?

We haven't don't that, I don't think it would be healthy to do so. It's much better to bottle those kind of things up and write lyrics about someone else doing them.

...and there you have it. Now has any one seen Ben's dress?...check your pockets please! Missed our Band of the Month feature way back in June, come over here people.

Catch this lot live on the following dates...

SUPERFOOD

Introducing brand new Birmingham act SUPERFOOD. Think Supergrass/Blur/fun times and you’re somewhere close. Another band out of brummie causing a stir...these sound about as mental as Dingus Khan, now that might get a bit leery...someone should make that happen.

LIVE REVIEW: THE STRYPES

Photo: Dave Wood
100 CLUB
MAY 2013

An aura of anticipation has been emerging around this Irish four-piece in the last few months, and from the moment they take to the stage at the 100 Club, it is easy to see why. With an average age of just sixteen, these boys have a swaggering stage presence and a polished live performance comparable to the early Stones.

After instructing a photographer at the front of the audience to move out of the way, telling him the front ‘is where people like to go fucking crazy’, the band launched into a frantic show. They played a mix of covers, sampling the likes of Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley, along with their own material, all saturated in a heavy blues influence, with an incredible sense of energy and enthusiasm. The gig saw the boys swapping instruments, taking turns on vocals and harmonica and dancing faster than anyone in the crowd.

Their electrifying single, 'Blue Collar Jane', certainly lived up to expectations, evoking New Orleans style rock and roll with their infectious riffs making it impossible for the crowd not to dance along. With musical expertise way beyond their young years, The Strypes nonchalantly sweat their way through adolescent angst with style, sporting sharp suits and sunglasses. A comparison to The Beatles is unavoidable, and although they are marketing nothing new, the raw talent and wild charisma of these boys is bound to go far.

The Strypes are never more at home than when on the road, and this summer sees them continue to tour the UK with a string of dates, many of which are already sold out or in high demand. Full dates below:

20/06 - The Fleece, Bristol
21/06 - Islington O2 Academy (Under 18s only Matinee + Evening performance)
10/07 - Sugarmill, Stoke
11/07 - 53 Degress, Preston
25/07 - O2 Academy, Oxford
22/08 - Globe, Cardiff

All videos are featured on their YouTube channel. Earlier this week the band were in the UK to play new tracks on BBC's 'Later... with Jools Holland'. ALBUM REVIEW: CHARLIE BOYER AND THE VOYEURS

CLARRITA

RELEASED: 27TH MAY 2013

Charlie Boyer and The Voyeurs have been kicking around the London underground scene for a while now and although pals TOY and Palma Violets have released debut albums which propelled them into the limelight, we haven't forgotten about the much loved Voyeurs. We can finally sink our teeth into their promising debut, Clarrieta.

What is noticeably striking is the bands ability to compile a mish-mash of styles into a tidy finished product. Yes, the first song - The Things We Be, boasts 60's guitar twangs, swaggering Wolfmother like vocals and a bit of organ thrown in for good measure. The result, eleven tracks that shoot you into a realm of something a little more vibrant than punk, but a little too grungy to be dubbed psychedelic.

With feverish guitar hooks, punk like tones of aggression it even feels like your listening to your dads old Deep Purple vinyl. You know when you put your headphones on and a track crops up that makes you feel like you own the world? Well this album bares many such moments, none more so than the dramatic spaghetti western intro of I've Got A River.

We're really enthused about this release, simply because it's different to anything that's been heard recently. The fact that's it's left somewhat unpolished, with bits of rampant distortion and vocals that seem like they were recorded at a Barfly gig, helps deliver that frantic character. For us, it ticks all the boxes and it may just be the ticket to the path of indie stardom for Mr Boyer and his Voyeurs.

Live dates...
21st   Manchester Soup Kitchen
22nd  Nottingham Spanky’s (Free show)
24th   Amsterdam Paradiso (London Calling)
25th   London Field Day
28th   Bristol Start The Busv 29th Oxford Jericho

VIRGIN RECORDS 40 YEARS OF DISRUPTIONS

2013 is the 40th anniversary of Virgin Records, the revolutionary British record label launched by Richard Branson in 1973. To mark the event there will be a series of events taking place this autumn celebrating the label’s rich history and ability to “disrupt the status quo”.

Founder Richard Branson said, “Virgin Records is where it all started for Virgin and 40 years later it's great to see we are still being innovative. This exciting series of events is the perfect way to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Virgin Records and the artists, from Mike Oldfield to Emeli Sandé, who continue to disrupt the status quo."

Taking place in the autumn and including artists past and present, the events to celebrate Virgin Records ‘40 years of disruptions’ will be supporting the charity, War Child. War Child protects children from the brutal effects of war and received the Special Recognition Award at this year’s BRIT Awards.

Events are as follows

Exhibition
The creative direction for the exhibition will be overseen by Adrian Shaughnessy, George Lee and the team at This Is Real Art. It will include photos (seen and unseen), seminal videos (including props) and memorabilia that capture the symbiotic collaborations between the cultural icons of the day. The location will be an exclusive venue in Mornington Crescent.

Book
A beautiful art book will be edited by leading music journalist Adrian Thrills. Adrian began his career editing the punk fanzine 48 Thrills before becoming one of the main feature writers for NME in the Eighties. He contributed fifty cover stories for the paper championing the 2-Tone movement and many of the post-punk, reggae and dance acts of the era; as well as writing the first ever cover story for iconic style magazine The Face featuring The Specials. The book will be designed by Adrian Shaughnessy.

Documentary
A film produced by Leopard Films, one of the UK’s leading production companies, and directed by Paul Tilzey, the director of many award winning documentaries for BBC and Channel 4 including ‘The 70s’. Executive producer Todd Austin and Fiona Morris' projects include ‘Do it Yourself; The Story of Rough Trade’ (BBC Four) and ‘Imagine: Damon and Jamie’s Excellent Adventure’ (BBC One) respectively.

Compilations
A compilation CD with 2 x Cd set; one disc with current Virgin artists covering Virgin classics, another disc with original Virgin classics. There will also be a series of Virgin 40 compilation CDs spanning the four decades.

BINARY

After the release of single ‘You Need The Blue Key’ in January, Binary are now giving away their new EP 'Amber EP'. 'G.O.D.' serves as the perfect prelude to the ‘Amber EP’ and signals a fearless young band honing their sound and showing an exciting glimpse into the musical journey that lies ahead.

"We wanted to make something that captured us at a particular moment in time. A distillation of all our influences and weirdness into a body of work. Its very much a transitional record. Where we came from when we started and we're we want to go sonically, but above all we want to bring the strange back into rock n' roll"

REVIEW: LIVERPOOL SOUND CITY

We ventured out of London and up North to Liverpool for the Sound City Festival last weekend. With over 360 artists performing in venues ranging from sticky floored pubs through to warehouses and car parks, old theaters and an Anglican cathedral we really were spoiled for choice.

Arriving early Thursday, there was ample time to soak up some of the city’s cultural heritage, with a trip to The Cavern providing us with a glimpse into the cities rich musical past and allowing us to witness the first of several Beatles cover bands we encountered over the weekend.

We also headed down to the Tate gallery to check out the Glam! Performance of Style exhibition which looks at glam style and sensibility in the UK and USA in its various manifestations through the work of artists such as Bowie, Eno and Roxy Music and Andy Warhol’s factory, through the form of photos, film, installation and music, an exhibition we highly recommend for anyone visiting the city.

It wasn’t long before the festival itself was getting underway, here were our highlights from the weekend:

SKATERS

We headed to packed out Zanzibar for our first band of the weekend in the form of hotly tipped New York based band Skaters. They created a very high energy show, emanating from both the stage and the mosh pit at the front of the crowd. The trio combined elements of punk, dub and indie, sounding something like if the Strokes had jammed with The Clash in a garage in 1979. The recognisable guitar style of Josh Hubbard from The Paddingtons contrasted well against stripped down dub sections. Their set list provided several frantic changes of pace, which keep the songs feeling fresh and the crowd dancing ferociously.

STEALING SHEEP

The grandeur of the Epstein Theatre provided the setting for the homecoming gig of Liverpool bred girls Stealing Sheep. Sound problems meant the girls were late to the stage but the crowd waited patiently in their seats until the red velvet theatre curtain rose to reveal them appropriately adorned with glitter and sequins waiting at their instruments. Their songs flowed seamlessly with their characteristic mix of blissful melodies, rousing sing-a-long choruses and handclaps, performing songs from both ‘Into the Diamond Sun’ and ‘Noah and the Paper Moon’.

There were a certain buzz about the gig and a hopeful feeling that the band were going to produce something a bit special in their hometown. Sure enough, a couple of songs before the end keyboardist Becky Hawley announced ‘we’ve got a surprise for you…’, before the Harlequin Dynamite Marching Band proceeded to parade onto the back of the stage bedecked in sequins and wearing animal masks. The addition of this new ten strong backing band created a joyous end to the set and elevated both the girls’ performance and sections of the audience to their feet, as people clambered closer to the front to dance next to the stage for the final songs of the evening.

TOY

We’ve seen TOY perform in all manner of different venues in London over the last couple of years and are well acquainted with their live shows. However the opportunity to see them in Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral offered a chance to see the band somewhere very special and they certainly stepped up to the occasion.

Opening with recent single ‘My Heart Skips a Beat’ they filled the enormous venue with synthesized organ music and choir-like backing vocals, leaving the spellbound crowd in awe. Switching into the faster paced early single ‘Left Myself Behind’ the jangling riffs continued to echo through the venue, driven by a powerful rhythmic section.

A TOY gig is almost as much a visual experience as it is an audio one with every flick of the hair seeming synchronised. Each member of the band seems totally immersed in playing their individual part at that moment in time, whilst creating a collective oneness composed of layered guitars and synthesisers.

We saw other bands struggle to hit the mark within this venue over the weekend however TOY certainly didn’t and we don’t think they would have any trouble performing on the bigger festival stages this summer.

CHARLIE BOYER AND THE VOYEURS

A warehouse space around the back of the Art Academy was a much more fitting venue to catch art punk meets garage psych outfit Charlie Boyer and the Voyeurs next in the evening.

The band have only been together little more than a year however have a very defined sound that they describe themselves as ‘primitive, glamorous, sexy, rock’n’roll music’ and an ease on stage that gives you the impression they’ve been playing together for a whole lot longer.

There are definite references to the New York scene of the 1970’s with influences seemingly ranging from Television through to The Velvet Underground. Scuzzy guitars paired with elements of glam-rock provide the backdrop for Boyer’s shrill vocal style, as he emits a cool air of nonchalance. The band showcased songs from their forthcoming album ‘Clarietta’, with simple catchy choruses which will make you feel like you’ve been listening to them to years.

MELODY'S ECHO CHAMBER

The Birkin and Bardot-esque Melody Prochet emerged from a cloud of incense to take to the stage to an eagerly awaiting capacity crowd in the Kazimer. Dressed in a pristine white dress the Parisian songstress launched into the joyous ‘I follow you’, the lead track from her self-titled debut album.

Her dream-like psychedelic style is intensified during the live performance as she and her backing band dance energetically throughout, exchanging smiles and thanking the crowd between every song.

Gliding across the stage barefoot and switching with ease between French and English lyrics the words seem to become secondary and her voice acts as another instrument in the rich tapestry of hypnotic sounds her and the band conjour up.

TEMPLES

The Leaf Café was the setting for the late-night set by Kettering based neo-psych band Temples. Watched in the audience by Heavenly Record-mates TOY and Charlie Boyer and the Voyeurs, front man James Bagshaw took complete control of the room in a fur coat and glitter with his own electric brand of swaggering energy. Silencing a fight in the crowd with an off the cuff Keith Richards at Altamont slur; ‘if these cats don’t cool it we’re gonna split’, Bagshaw and the band launch into a raucous set, transporting the frenzied audience into a kaleidoscopic 60’s soundscape.

There are once again glam-rock elements to the set with a heavy T-Rex style intro to one of the songs, however the heavy-fringed quartet show their true potential with final track and fan-favourite, ‘Shelter Song’, where twanging guitars mingle blissfully with melodic Bryds-esque dual vocals. If they are able to produce an album full of songs as powerful as this one they will go very far indeed.

The teenage angst really cuts through in the new video from IS TROPICAL's new single 'Dancing Anymore' released on Kitsune'/[PIAS] Cooperative Music on 13th May. The eye popping gore spattered boyhood fantasy is the follow up collaboration with Parisian hotshots MEGAFORCE and definitely notches things up a little. SWIM DEEP: SHE CHANGES THE WEATHER

Out on Monday (13th) is SWIM DEEP's new single 'She Changes The Weather' on Chess Club. Part of the Birmingham indie scuzz that is at the forefront of the limelight 'She Changes The Weather' is a bit of a balled, slow building repetitive rhythms with a piano lead pathing the way for a beautiful vocal, it's sad and dreamy and just...just damn cool, lyrics and all. The video was filmed out in NYC after the band’s SXSW shows. You can also get in to the b-side 'Simmer' below.

LISTEN: HOLOGRAMS

'Flesh & Bone' is the new track from HOLOGRAMS, taken from their new album which is not out until September. Ages away yes, but the hype surrounding Holograms last year was intense, I mean we couldn't get in the tent at 1234 Fest, yes, we're still foaming about that one! This new LP is believed to have a more mature bow to their song writing echoing both the violent abandonment of punk as well as some of the electronic gloss of early 80s new wave. Sounds pretty epic right?

WATCH: EDITORS

EDITORS have unveiled their new single 'A Ton of Love' from their forth studio album 'The Weight of Your Love'. The new track was Zane Lowe's 'Hottest Record In The World' a couple of nights ago. Editors sees a shift in line up since guitarist Chris Urbanowicz left last year.

Frontman Tom Smith has described ‘The Weight Of Your Love’ as '‘having a foot in that alt rock / Americana world’ and of ‘feeling untouchable at times’.' Editors make a series of high profile festival performances across the summer, including headlining slots at Belgium’s Werchter Festival, Lowlands in Holland and major appearances at 25 festivals across Europe. In the UK the band play prestigious slots at Glastonbury Festival, T In The Park and Reading and Leeds.

WESTERN LOWS

Western Lows have a new track "Icicles" which is taken from their debut album "Glacial" out June 4th via JAXART Records. The gloom pop vibes are reminiscent of The Cure. Hushed vocals with barbed-wire guitars and widescreen washes of sound. Dig it!
